CONSTRUCT exhibition

I'm delighted to say that my installation work [De]Constructed Cloth has been selected for the new 62 Group exhibition, 'CONSTRUCT' at Sunny Bank Mills gallery.

It was an ambitious piece of work to make. Nine metres of cloth; printed, dyed, over-printed and deconstructed. The work involved many layers of imagery and process, making and unmaking.

"Hannah makes connections between the heritage of cloth production and present day textile manufacturing, creating complex, layered and deconstructed imagery, presented in sculptural form. The changing fortunes of West Yorkshire’s textile industry, have been represented by prints of unpicked cloth fragments and waste fibres from local weaving mills."

It's a real privilege to show this work at Sunny Bank Mill, which was the starting point for the work. I have exhibited here several times before but showing work alongside some of the best textile artists in the UK (and overseas), is a real treat. Work by Caroline Bartlett, Richard McVetis, Debbie Lyddon, Nigel Cheney, Tilleke Schwarz, Caren Garfen, Jane McKeating, Isobel Currie... and so many more.

CTRL/Shift at MAC Birmingham

I would like to warmly invite you to attend the preview of

Saturday 21 July 2018
2pm - 4pm
First Floor Gallery

Free admission.

"Ctrl/Shift takes shifts and changes as its theme, in particular it is centred on artists whose practice is or has transformed, in small or large ways, especially towards expressions of innovation in textile art. These shifts may be around changing attitudes to control; the introduction of new materials and techniques; and/or the impact of innovative ideas and evolving technologies."

My own work, made specially for the exhibition, is titled 'The Sampling Project' and comprises a series of small textile sample panels inspired by archival materials and Japanese katagami stencils. The exhibition brief was a great opportunity to explore ideas in response to visits I made over the last couple of years to a textile archive in Roubaix, France. It was also a the perfect excuse I needed for testing out dye, print and embroidery processes that have intrigued me for a while.

Alongside the main exhibition, visitors will be able to view the 'Project Space', to gain an insight into the working processes, techniques and approaches of the artists in the exhibition. You will be able to view sketchbooks (including my own), and short films that shed light on the back story of the work on show.

Openings

Today is the start of the the 62 Group's Ebb & Flow exhibition in Grimsby. However the Official Opening event will take place on Saturday, with June Hill opening the exhibition. I am really looking forward to seeing the final hanging of the exhibition at both venues, especially at Grimsby Minster, which will host some really massive pieces of textile art.

There will be work by some big names, including Audrey Walker MBE, Tilleke Schwarz, Rachael Howard and Heather Belcher, to name but a few. It feels slightly surreal to be exhibiting alongside these artists... how did that happen?

It would be lovely to see you there at the opening on Saturday 13th September 2014.

The exhibition is spread over 2 venues:
From 3.30 pm at the Fishing Heritage Centre
From 5.00 pm at Grimsby Minster

The exhibition runs 9th September to 2nd November, and is accompanied by two other textile related exhibitions.

Ebb & Flow

Today I visited Grimsby to hang my work for the forthcoming 62 Group exhibition 'Ebb & Flow'. For this exhibition I have worked on a sequence of three large cyanotype prints on silk. The tryptic, called 'Baptism', explores the euphoric experience of cold water swimming. Through personal observations, the sensual awakening of the body is traced as shimmering stitched marks on the surface.

You can see this and work by many distinguished artists in Ebb & Flow at the Fishing Heritage Centre and Grimsby Minster, Grimsby, NE Lincolnshire from 9th September to 2nd November 2014. You can see some photos and read about the special events on the Ebb & Flow Facebook page.
