I'm delighted to say that my installation work [De]Constructed Cloth has been selected for the new 62 Group exhibition, 'CONSTRUCT' at Sunny Bank Mills gallery.

It was an ambitious piece of work to make. Nine metres of cloth; printed, dyed, over-printed and deconstructed. The work involved many layers of imagery and process, making and unmaking.

"Hannah makes connections between the heritage of cloth production and present day textile manufacturing, creating complex, layered and deconstructed imagery, presented in sculptural form. The changing fortunes of West Yorkshire’s textile industry, have been represented by prints of unpicked cloth fragments and waste fibres from local weaving mills."

It's a real privilege to show this work at Sunny Bank Mill, which was the starting point for the work. I have exhibited here several times before but showing work alongside some of the best textile artists in the UK (and overseas), is a real treat. Work by Caroline Bartlett, Richard McVetis, Debbie Lyddon, Nigel Cheney, Tilleke Schwarz, Caren Garfen, Jane McKeating, Isobel Currie... and so many more.
My own work, made specially for the exhibition, is titled 'The Sampling Project' and comprises a series of small textile sample panels inspired by archival materials and Japanese katagami stencils. The exhibition brief was a great opportunity to explore ideas in response to visits I made over the last couple of years to a textile archive in Roubaix, France. It was also a the perfect excuse I needed for testing out dye, print and embroidery processes that have intrigued me for a while.

Alongside the main exhibition, visitors will be able to view the 'Project Space', to gain an insight into the working processes, techniques and approaches of the artists in the exhibition. You will be able to view sketchbooks (including my own), and short films that shed light on the back story of the work on show.

Over the last two years I have been working with friend and fellow artist Claire Wellesley-Smith on Lasting Impressions, an artwork commissioned by Saltaire Inspired. During Saltaire Arts Trail in May 2016 and 2017 we created a performative and participatory work in the spinning room at Salts Mill, which aimed to capture a record of the clothes worn by visitors, start discussions about cloth and archive these responses through making.

Given the wealth of responses and the discussions provoked by the work it seemed fitting to capture all of this in a publication. Our Lasting Impressions artists' book will be launched at this years' Saltaire Arts Trail, 5th - 7th May at my Open Studio. Join us at the Butterfly Rooms, Gordon Terrace as we present elements of the project.

If you can't make it along we will be announcing how you can buy a copy after the event.
Whilst there I came across a collection of beautiful hand-cut katagami; Japanese textile printing stencils. I went home, read up about katagami and found out about the craftsmanship involved in their construction. I was fascinated by the double layers and the network of supporting silk threads laminated between; the damaged examples providing both an insight into their construction but also creative inspiration.

Since then I have made another visit to Roubaix to study the stencils in more detail. I also embarked on a period of creative research and experimentation. Originally I didn't intend this to be so extensive or to continue for so long, but such is the case when there is an open ended brief.

More
recently I have been experimenting with natural dyeing, printing and
mordanting. Applying previous knowledge with exploration of techniques,
combining them with other surface effects and generally taking an
exploratory approach. I chose to take an impirical approach to sampling, noting down fibre composition, testing a range of processes, and combinations of process. Whilst I can't claim to have been entirely scientific about it, this approach to the project has given me some structure which I was badly in need of.

As printed textiles are not my background it has been interesting to explore this area, and whilst I certainly don't feel I am an 'expert' I feel I have developed some competance; even if my enquiries have led to even more 'what if's' than I had before. I suppose this is the very nature of learning, that the more you learn, the more you realise there is to learn. Having some time to use the excellent screen printing workshop at Bradford School of Art has been a great benefit.
Sorry patient readers. I have been busy doing things in other places, both on the web and elsewhere. If you want to catch up on what I have done in between you can follow my visual travels on Instagram.

I have been trying to slow things down a bit; finding time for some fun things and some restful things. This stitching of indigo dyed thread on antique printed calico, has been a welcome combination of activity and rest, while I think about plans for next year. Keep an eye on my website for some new workshops to be announced very soon.
If anything I feel like the experience was slightly unreal. Both the fact that we were given this incredible opportunity and that it happened at all seem like some strange fantasy; did that really just happen? The chance to make a work in the incredible top floor, Spinning Room at Salts Mill was just wonderful and, I expect, once in a lifetime.
We had no way of knowing what response we would get from visitors and participants. We were so pleased that people seemed to not only 'get it', but that they really engaged with the work. From the 300+ people of all ages, genders and backgrounds who took part, we had some really thoughtful responses and generous comments. It was also great to see so many of our friends and supporters, thank you!
I was very fortunate this week to travel to Roubaix, France with Bradford School of Art. During my trip I visited the wonderful Tissuthèque textile archive at Musee la Piscine. The archivist, Norah, brought out some wonderful items for us to see. Although it was a brief visit I found it very inspiring and have some further lines of research in mind, but for now that's under wraps while I work on other things. Not long now until Lasting Impressions...

The Lasting Impressions project I am currently working on with Claire Wellesley-Smith is something very different for me. As a performative work, it will take place and grow in situ at Salts Mill. It is such an exciting opportunity and I feel really honoured to be able to work on this.

It took me by complete surprise (although it probably shouldn't have) that I have missed the slow build-up of making that I usually associate with a project. I miss the making and I miss the reassurance of a physical object taking shape. It makes me nervous to have nothing in my studio and just lists and invoices in my notebook.

I keep telling myself that the magic will happen in the moment... Fingers crossed!

That doesn't always make for fascinating reading but today one if those projects started to feel much more real.

I am really lucky this year to be creating a new work called 'Lasting Impressions' in partnership with my friend Claire Wellesley-Smith for Saltaire Arts Trail. With the support of Saltaire Inspired and Arts Council England we have been commissioned to make a performative work for the duration of the event (28-30 May 2016). We are very fortunate to be using the wonderful Spinning Room at Salts Mill and today we had our first planning visit.

At 168 metres long it is a truly amazing space with an atmosphere all of it's own. It makes it all the more special that it isn't usually open to the public. This will be an exciting, if slightly daunting project. I will be sharing more here and on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook over the coming weeks.

It wasn't until yesterday that I realised I hadn't walked along the
riverbank since before the flooding. Perhaps that meant I hadn't fully
come to terms with the scale of events, the power of the river and the
effect on us all. It's been a tiring, stressful period and I think I
needed to see the river again.

I love to collect. The
act of beachcombing or mudlarking slows me down. It makes me focus. It
makes my brain work at things in a very primative (in a good way)
manner. I think there is something about the act of sorting and
searching that helps me settle and regain my composure.

Yesterday I enjoyed
findng the usual 19th century pottery fragments in and amongst the
horrible 21st century filth, washed up on the riverbank. But the other
thing I have previously observed in numbers are shoe and leather parts.
Never before have I found a whole shoe though, which made me think I wonder how
old these are? The sheer numbers suggest this is the rubbish from a
cobblers. I know there was a tannery just upstream until around 1900/1908; I
wonder if there was a leatherworker there too?

If anyone has any thoughts let me know.

It really has been a funny old year, especially the last few weeks and months.

On Boxing Day morning we received notification to leave our house due to severe flood risk and while the road and our garage were under water, thankfully our home was left unscathed. My heart goes out to all those who have had homes and businesses ruined by flooding, especially artists and small business owners. All in all it has been a very stressful time in my adopted town of Bingley, but it has as made me all the more grateful for what I have. The support of the local community, friends and family is truly astonishing.

I am sending out the old year helping with Bingley Flood Support group and then resting next to the fire. Here's to a calmer, dryer 2016!
2015 has been a busy year for exhibitions, teaching and workshops; so busy of late that I haven't been very present here on my blog. At the moment I am enjoying a little bit of a rest while I plan for the coming year. If you are interested in joining me for a workshop in 2016 there are now several new dates listed on my website.Hannah Lambhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03477406715223164791noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8313240227914358173.post-47928043376811611102015-10-30T21:20:00.001+00:002015-10-30T21:20:54.665+00:00Out of the BlueI am a massive fan of Embroidery magazine and its coverage of contemporary textile art. Over the last two weeks I have been exploring new directions with some of the patchwork and embroidery pieces I have been working on. Taking the plunge with ink and roller, I have been working on some new prints, for the forthcoming 'Material Evidence' exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills. I am really excited by the detail reproduction of each fibre and stitch, and also the opportunities for playing with composition. I think this might be just the start of something for me.

I hope you will join us for afternoon tea 2-4pm to celebrate the opening.

It's a joy to do, but just tricky to find the time. Lately I have had to carve out little bits of time for stitching... and therefore no time for blogging (sorry!).

Here are some little clues about what I am working on for the forthcoming exhibition 'Material Evidence' at Sunny Bank Mills.
